ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to 16
th-ranked Lewis University, 6-1 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. USI goes to 22-15 overall and 12-14 in the GLVC, while Lewis takes its record to 25-5, 19-3 GLVC.
In the opener, the Screaming Eagles could not generate enough offense as they fell to the GLVC East-leading Flyers, 6-1. USI scored its only run of the game on an RBI-single in the seventh inning by freshman leftfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana).
The Flyers scored two runs in the second and fifth innings, while plating single runs in the sixth and seventh frames.
USI sophomore right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Wright (5-4) pitched seven innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out four batters.
In the nightcap, Lewis right-hander Matt Frahm carried a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter through five innings before USI's offense clicked in the top of the sixth. USI junior second baseman
A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) drove in two runs to give USI a 2-1 lead with a two-out single. The Eagles had loaded the bases with no outs before the two run single by Dokey.
The Flyers, however, stole the momentum back in the bottom of the sixth when designated hitter Ben Albano knocked in a pair of runs, including the game-winner, with a one-out triple. Eagles' junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Indiana) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work.
USI concludes its longest road swing of the year Sunday when the Eagles and the Flyers tangle in a noon doubleheader. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Oakland City University for a 6 p.m. contest.
