Eagles reach .500 in the GLVC

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team blasted Kentucky Wesleyan College in a doubleheader sweep, 5-1 and 12-3, Wednesday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI goes to 22-13 overall and 12-12 in the GLVC, while KWC takes its record to 11-25, 5-19 GLVC.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Screaming Eagles reach the .500 mark in the GLVC for the first since the opening week of the 2013 conference season.
The Eagles scored all of the runs they would need in the first inning of game one and cruised to a 5-1 victory. USI freshman first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) hits his first collegiate grand slam and his team-best second home run of the season to give the Eagles the margin of victory.
On the mound, USI junior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) posted his third win of the season in the opener. Shaw (3-1), who has started his last three appearances, allowed one run on four hits and two walks. He also struck out a season-high six batters in six innings of work.
Senior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) finished the game for USI. He pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out the side.
In the nightcap, USI opened the game with four runs in the first and sealed the game with five runs in the fifth before closing out the 12-3 victory. The five-run fifth was highlighted by a leadoff home run by junior designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana). Weinzapfel's second home run of the season tied him with Cope for the team-lead.
Freshman catcher
Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) led the Eagles' second game offensive burst with three RBIs, while junior shortstop
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) and Cope added two RBIs each.
Cope finished the doubleheader with three hits, six RBIs, three runs scored, and the first game grand slam.
USI sophomore right-hander
Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana) worked five tough innings to get the win. Austin (2-0) allowed one run on eight hits and three walks, while striking out a season-best eight batters. Sophomore right-hander
Jay Hachmeister (Tennysen, Indiana) and senior right-hander
Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) finished game the game on the mound for USI.
USI finishes its longest road swing of the year April 20-21 at Lewis University. The Eagles and the GLVC East Division leading Flyers will play a noon doubleheader each day.
