Eagles hit the road for six in the GLVC
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week. Wright joins junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Indiana) as the second USI hurler to receive GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors this spring.
Wright, who was 2-0 with a 0.40 ERA in three homestand starts, earned recognition from the GLVC after recording the first shutout of his collegiate career and a career-best six strikeouts in the win over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The junior right-hander also was perfect through 4.1 innings, allowed just two hits (one was erased on a double play), and faced one batter over the minimum.
For the season, Wright (5-3) also leads the Eagles with a team-best 1.74 ERA in 10 games and 67.1 innings of work. The 1.74 ERA ranks fourth in the GLVC.
Wright and the Screaming Eagles begin their longest stretch away from home this season when they hit the road this week in the GLVC. The road swing begins in Owensboro, Kentucky, Wednesday when the Eagles visit Kentucky Wesleyan College for a doubleheader and concludes in Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Lewis University for a four-game series.
The first pitch Wednesday at KWC and this weekend at Lewis is
noon each day. Coverage of the Eagles' games, including live stats and audio broadcasts, is available at gousieagles.com.
USI (20-13, 10-12 GLVC) was 8-3 during the recent homestand. The Eagles finished their stay at home by taking three of four from the UW-Parkside Rangers.
In addition to Wright, junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Indiana) also was 2-0 during the homestand and has a 5-2 mark overall, while junior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) was 2-1 at the USI Baseball Field and has a team-best 6-3 record overall.
At the plate during the homestand, freshman outfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) was USI's top hitter with a .448 batting average throughout the home swing. Junior designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) leads the Eagles for the season with a .418 mark and 19 RBIs.
Freshman first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) is tied with Weinzapfel for the top spot on the team in RBIs with 19 of his own.
The Panthers of KWC (11-23, 5-17 GLVC) hosts the Eagles after losing four-straight games over the weekend to Lewis. KWC also has won just four times in the last 19 games, including a pair of losses to USI last week at the USI Baseball Field.
USI leads the all-time series with KWC, 92-63, and has won five of the last six with the Panthers.
The Flyers of Lewis (22-5, 16-3 GLVC) sit on top of the GLVC East Division and have a three-game lead after the four-game sweep of KWC last weekend. Lewis, which hosts a doubleheader with UW-Parkside Wednesday, has won 16 of its last 18 games going into this week.
The Eagles hold a slim all-time lead over the Flyers, 50-49, after splitting a four-game series last year. USI also has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with Lewis in the last three years.
