INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Southern Indiana softball team surrendered a combined 12 unanswered runs as it suffered a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference losses to No. 1 University of Indianapolis Saturday. The Screaming Eagles lost the opener, 4-3, before suffering an 8-0 setback in five innings in game two.
Freshman
Janna Green singled and scored off a hit by sophomore
Brooke Harmening in the top of the first inning as the Eagles took an early 1-0 advantage.
USI (19-14, 9-11 GLVC) tacked on two more in the third frame as sophomore
MacKenzi Dorsam followed an RBI-single by Green with a run-scoring double.
UIndy (36-2, 18-0 GLVC), however, answered the Eagles' challenge in the fourth inning. The Greyhounds, who extended their winning streak to 29, capitalized had three doubles and capitalized on a USI error to score three times and tie the contest.
The Greyhounds took the lead two innings later as a pair of defensive miscues led to another tally and a 4-3 UIndy advantage.
USI, which has lost five straight, had a pair of runners on base in the seventh, but could not push across the tying score.
Harmening (15-7) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up four unearned runs off seven hits in six innings of work. She walked two and struck out five Greyhound batters.
UIndy continued to benefit from USI defensive miscues in game two as it capitalized on two first-inning errors to score six times. Sophomore Casey Williamson had a three-run home run and freshman Jenny Thompson had a two-run shot as UIndy sent 12 batters to the plate in the first frame.
The Greyhounds added two more in the fourth and held USI to just one hit as they won via the eight-run rule.
Freshman
Sarah Owens (4-6) was charged with the setback after giving up eight runs, three earned, off 11 hits in four innings of action.
USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it travels to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph's College in a GLVC doubleheader. The Pumas (18-11, 6-11 GLVC) hosted Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday.
