EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dominated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside by sweeping a doubleheader, 6-0 and 12-1, Saturday at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles climb to 19-12 overall and 9-11 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside falls to 1-17, 1-15 GLVC.
USI took the opener, 6-0, behind the near perfect performance of sophomore right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana). Wright (5-3) posted his first career shutout by allowing just two hits and facing one batter over the minimum. He also struck out a career-high six batters and did not walk a batter over the nine innings.
The Eagles scored all of the runs Wright would need in the first inning. Junior designated hitter
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) singled in senior third baseman
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) with a two-out, base hit to right field to give USI a 1-0.
The Eagles would go on to add four runs in the second and two more in the seventh to seal the victory. Weinzapfel was USI's top hitter in the opener, going three-for-four with a pair of RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Eagles received another dominating pitching performance from its starter as they defeated the Rangers, 12-1.
USI junior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) went the first five innings of the nightcap and earned his second win of the year. Shaw (2-1) allowed one run on five hits, while striking out a season-best five batters. Senior right-hander
Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) finished the game for the Eagles, throwing a pair of scoreless innings and striking out two.
Offensively, USI caught fire in the third inning and scored four times for all the runs they would need in the nightcap. The Eagles would follow the four-run third with four more in the fourth and fifth innings to seal the 12-1 victory.
Weinzapfel continued to lead the offensive punch, driving in two more runs in game two. Freshman leftfielder
Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) also drove in a pair of runs, while freshman centerfielder
Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) scored three times in the win.
The Eagles and the Rangers conclude the four-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday with a doubleheader. A pair of USI wins would bring the Eagles back to the .500 mark in the GLVC for the first time since the opening weekend.
