EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Ashland University Monday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field to conclude the first half of the Dunn Hospitality Classic. USI took the opener, 8-4, while Ashland shutout the Screaming Eagles in the nightcap, 8-0.
The Eagles see their record go to 5-1 in 2013, while Ashland ends its first weekend of action, 2-1.
USI overcame a 4-1 deficit with a five-run third inning and went on to defeat Ashland, 8-4, in game one. The Eagles were led by junior rightfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana), who was two-for-four with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Freshman first baseman
Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) followed with three hits in four trips to the plate, driving in two RBIs.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) posted his first win as an Eagle in relief. Shaw allowed one hit and a walk, while striking out two in four innings of relief of junior right-handed starter
David Toth (Danville, Illinois). Toth picked up the no decision after allowing eight hits and four runs in three innings on the mound.
A pair of Ashland pitcher stymied the Eagle hitters in game two and defeated USI, 8-0. USI hit into five double plays, three of which ended the first, second, and third innings. The Eagles were only able to collect four hits in the nightcap and were never able to get a runner past second base.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) took the loss for USI. Bowles (1-1) allowed 10 hits and four runs, while striking out three in five innings of work. Senior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois), sophomore right-hander
Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana), and junior right-hander
Nicholas Heinz (Vincennes, Indiana) followed Bowles to the mound.
The Eagles continues the 10-game homestand Friday when they open the second weekend of the Dunn Hospitality with a 5 p.m. game with Drury University. The final weekend of the classic includes USI, Drury, the University of Indianapolis, and Augustana University.
