RENSSELAER, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not stay on track, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College, 4-2 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Rensselaer, Indiana. USI sees its record fall to 12-10 overall and 3-9 in the GLVC, while Saint Joseph's goes to 11-8, 8-4 GLVC.

In the opener, the Screaming Eagles stranded seven runners and allowed two unearned runs in losing to the Pumas, 4-2.

Saint Joseph's jumped out in front with tallies in the first and second innings. The Eagles cut the deficit in half in the third when freshman centerfielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) to make the score, 2-1.

The Pumas responded in the bottom half of the third with two more runs to seal the victory. The Eagles tried to chip away at the deficit in the sixth when freshman second baseman Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) drove in freshman first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2, but could get no closer.

Eagles' junior right-hander David Toth (Danville, Illinois) took the loss, lasting just two-plus innings. Toth (3-2) allowed all four runs, two earned, on five hits, while striking out two.

Sophomore right-hander Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles, working the final four innings. Austin allowed two hits and a walk, while striking out two.

USI started better in the second game, but allowed six-straight unanswered runs by Saint Joseph's in dropping the nightcap, 6-1.

The Eagles took the initial lead, 1-0, in the top of the third inning when freshman centerfielder Hamilton Carr (Evansville, Indiana) manufactured a run by himself. Carr reached on a fielder's choice and circled the bases on a pair of Puma errors after stealing second.

Saint Joseph's responded with three runs in the third, two in the fifth and a final tally in the eighth to post the 6-1 win.

USI senior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) took the loss in his first start of the year. Carver (0-3) allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits, while tying a career-best with five strike outs in 4.1 innings of work.

Carver was followed to the mound by junior right-hander Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois), who finished the final 3.2 innings. Shaw allowed one run on four hits.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field next week, starting an 11-game homestand with a pair of 6 p.m. single games against Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday and Wednesday. The homestand also includes a four-game series with defending GLVC and Midwest Region champion University of Indianapolis April 5-7.
