EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore Brooke Harmening tossed her second-career no-hitter Saturday to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 3-0 game-one victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division foe University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles (13-8, 3-5 GLVC), who settled for a split in the doubleheader after losing the second game, 2-1, took advantage of an error in the bottom of the first inning of game one to plate the first run of the contest.

Harmening (9-3), who struck out six batters, had an RBI-single in the frame as USI claimed the 1-0 advantage. Junior Kyla Gogel had an RBI-single in the third inning to put the Eagles up, 2-0, while freshman Janna Green gave USI an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI-groundout.

UW-Parkside (4-12 GLVC, 1-5 GLVC), was held to just two base-runners, both of which came in the sixth inning as Harmening plunked the leadoff batter. Following a sacrifice bunt, a strikeout, an error, and a stolen base, the Rangers had runners at second and third with two outs.

Harmening got out of the jam by inducing a fly out to Gogel in leftfield for the third out; then sent Rangers down in order in the seventh inning to complete her second no-hitter—her first came as a freshman against Kentucky Wesleyan College.

In game two, a pair of leadoff doubles allowed the Rangers to forge a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Alexis Simone, who was 2-of-3 with two doubles, led the second inning off with a two-bagger into the left-centerfield gap. She scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly.

The Rangers struck again in the fifth inning, this time taking advantage of a leadoff double and an error to notch their second tally.

USI capitalized on a leadoff double and an error in the last part of the fifth to cut the deficit in half. Freshman Kaitlyn England hit a deep shot to the wall in centerfield and scampered to third base when UW-Parkside centerfielder Ashley Nowdomski fumbled the ball before picking it up and getting it into the infield.

England scored in the next at-bat as junior Lauren Hatfield grounded out to the opposite side of the infield. Hatfield was credited with the RBI.

Sophomore MacKenzi Dorsam, who was 2-for-2 at the plate in the second game, had a one-out double in the sixth inning, but UW-Parkside hurler Kristin Kleinmeyer retired the next two batters before sending the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the seventh frame to pick up the victory.

Freshman Sarah Owens was charged with the loss after surrendering two runs, one earned, off four hits and a pair of walks. She had five strikeouts in five-plus innings of work as she fell to 4-4 with the decision.

USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts a GLVC doubleheader with Lewis University at the USI Softball Field.
