Weather, field conditions force softball site changes

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Wintery weather and unplayable field conditions have forced site changes in the University of Southern Indiana softball team's series with Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division foes University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University this weekend.

The Screaming Eagles (12-7, 2-4 GLVC) will host Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at noon in a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field before concluding the weekend Sunday at noon with a conference twinbill at the USI Softball Field.

USI was originally scheduled to travel to Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis this weekend and host the two teams in April. Due to the change, USI will travel to Romeoville, Illinois, and Somers, Wisconsin, next month.

The Eagles went 5-1 in its trip to Florida and the Rebel Spring Games last week, but a pair of GLVC losses to the University of Missouri-St. Louis this past Saturday has left a sour taste in the Eagles' mouths.

Sophomore Brooke Harmening and junior Kelsey Jankowski paced the Eagles at the plate, while Harmening led USI in the pitcher's circle. Harmening hit .385 with three doubles, a home run, and nine RBIs, while Jankowski hit .333 with three doubles and eight RBIs.

In the circle, Harmening was 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA and a .188 opponent batting average. She racked up 27 strikeouts and issued just six walks in five appearances and 27.2 innings of work.

For the season, Harmening is hitting .344 with six doubles, three home runs, and 17 RBIs, while Jankowski is hitting .269 with a home run and 15 RBIs. Harmening is 8-3 in the circle with a 1.47 ERA and a .182 opponent batting average.

Junior Teri Newmaster leads the Eagles with a .354 batting average, while freshman Janna Green and sophomore MacKenzi Dorsam are hitting .333 and .306, respectively.

UW-Parkside (3-11, 0-4 GLVC) has lost six straight games entering its bout with USI Saturday. Freshman Katie Neubauer leads the Rangers with a .381 batting average and eight RBIs, while sophomore Kelynn Sporer is 1-3 in the pitcher's circle with a team-best 2.01 ERA.

Lewis (5-3, 2-0 GLVC), which plays Upper Iowa University Wednesday and Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday, swept a GLVC doubleheader from Quincy University after going 3-3 in its Florida trip to begin the season.

The Flyers' lineup features five players with a .400 or better batting average, including seniors Alexis Munaco and Jayme Hefler. Munaco is hitting .538 with seven RBIs, while Hefler is hitting .522 with 10 runs scored and seven RBIs. Sophomore Kelly Bowler is 3-2 with a 1.58 ERA to lead the Flyers in the circle.
