EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team restarts Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with a four-game series with Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday and Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m., while Sunday's twin bill is slated for 1 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles (11-3, 2-2 GLVC), who are tied for 18
th nationally in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Top 25 poll and received votes for the
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 poll, are coming off a four-game split with Rockhurst University to open the conference schedule. USI swept the opening doubleheader, 7-6 and 4-1, but came up short in the series-ending doubleheader, 1-0 and 5-4.
Overall last week, the Eagles were 4-2 after taking a pair from Augustana University. USI also finished its season-opening homestand with a 9-1 mark.
Eagles' junior infielder
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) was USI's top hitter last week, batting .429 with seven RBIs. Rounder also is hitting .422 for the season with 10 RBIs.
Before an injury forced him to miss the last two games of the homestand, USI junior outfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) was leading the squad with a .550 batting average. He also still has a team-best13 RBIs for the season, despite missing the last seven games.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) was the Eagles' top hurler in last week's six games. He had five appearances and one start, posting a 0.71 ERA and striking out 11 in 12.1 innings of work. The junior also held the opposition to a .186 batting average.
For the season, Shaw has a 0.46 ERA in eight games and one start. He also has 16 strikeouts in his 19.2 innings.
USI junior right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) follows Shaw on the mound with a 2.43 ERA. Wright is tied for first on the team in wins with junior right-hander
David Toth (Danville, Illinois) and junior right-hander
Matt Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) with three wins each.
The Miners of Missouri S&T (3-9, 2-2 GLVC) also split its GLVC opening series with McKendree University. Missouri S&T won two the first day, 13-0 and 9-8, but lost the last day, 6-2 and 8-5. The losses on Sunday snapped a three-game winning streak for the Miners, their longest of the season.
