EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team stranded 14 runners on base as it dropped both games of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at the USI Softball Field. Missouri-St. Louis won game one, 3-1, and game two, 16-1.
Despite racking up eight hits in the opening game, including three extra-base hits, the Screaming Eagles struggled to push runs across the plate.
USI (12-7, 2-4 GLVC) left nine runners on base in game one, including seven runners in scoring position.
Missouri-St. Louis (11-7, 3-1 GLVC), meanwhile, took advantage of a third-strike passed ball to put together a two-out rally in the second inning and break a scoreless tie. The Tritons tacked on two more runs in the third inning to forge a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore
MacKenzi Dorsam had a run-scoring triple in the fifth inning to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. USI had runners at second and third in the sixth inning with just one out, but back-to-back strikeouts allowed the Tritons to preserve their two-run advantage.
Sophomore pitcher
Brooke Harmening was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs, two earned, off four hits and a pair of walks. She had six strikeouts as she fell to 8-3 on the season.
In game two, Missouri-St. Louis used a three-run blast off the bat of senior Haleigh Jenkins in the top half of the first inning to build a 3-0 lead. USI had runners at second and third with one out in the second inning, but could not score as Tritons' sophomore pitcher Brittni Chapman got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam.
The Tritons tacked on two more in the third frame, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth inning before a four-error seventh frame led to eight tallies and a 15-run advantage.
Dorsam had a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Eagles on the scoreboard, but USI had just five hits as the Eagles suffered their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Freshman
Sarah Owens was charged with the loss after giving up five runs off four hits and two walks in two-plus innings of work.
USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts Maryville University in a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Saints (3-7, 0-0 GLVC) opened the GLVC campaign Saturday in Owensboro, Kentucky.
