KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Junior
A.J. Dokey had three hits in six at-bats Friday at Rockhurst University to help lead the 30th ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team to a sweep over the Hawks in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. The Screaming Eagles took game one 7-6 and followed that up with a 4-1 victory.
Game One
USI used a six-run third inning to pull ahead of Rockhurst, who was up 2-0 going into the frame. The big inning was aided by a fielding and throwing error by the Hawks.
Dokey got the inning started with a double to the gap and then later scored when senior
Reece Rounder grounded into a fielders choice. Senior
B.J. Willis, who followed Rounder picked-up his 11th RBI on an infield single.
The big blow in the inning came from freshman
Andrew Cope's bat when he singled in Rounder and Willis.
However, Rockhurst would not go away as it scored four runs over the last five innings to get within a run (7-6) in the eighth.
Junior
Brandon Shaw, who entered the game in the eighth with bases juiced, got out of the jam by inducing a ground ball.
Earning the win for the Eagles was junior
David Toth (3-0), who pitched six innings, struck out eight and allowed five runs. Shaw, meanwhile received his second save of the season, which was tied for the team lead.
Game Two
Each club scored a first inning run, but a three-run fifth gave the Eagles 4-1 lead when Dokey, junior
Bryce Shoulders and freshman
Kyle Kempf drove in the runs.
USI (11-1, 2-0) struck first, when Rounder drove his 10
th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly in top half of the first. However, USI would give the run back in the bottom of the inning after junior
Matt Bowles allowed three hits to the first four batters.
Bowles (3-1) though would settle down, as he allowed just two more Rockhurst runners in scoring position.
The Mt. Washington, Kentucky, native finished his day tossing 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and sitting down seven.
Shaw came in again to earn his third save of the season after relieving Bowles in the sixth. Shaw struck out a pair of Rockurst (4-5, 0-2) batters and gave up just two hits over his 1.2 innings of work.
The same two teams meet Saturday afternoon beginning at noon for a doubleheader.
