KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored a combined 16 runs off 21 hits Thursday as it ended the Rebel Spring Games with a 10-2 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead and a 6-3 win over Midwest Region foe Tiffin University.
USI (12-5) scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early advantage over Minnesota State Moorhead. The Screaming Eagles, who racked up 15 hits in the contest, added a tally in the third frame before posting two runs in both the fourth and sixth stanzas. They finished their scoring output with a three-spot in the seventh inning.
Sophomore
Brooke Harmening went 4-of-5 at the plate with a double and four RBIs, while junior
Kelsey Jankowski was 2-of-4 with a double and three RBIs. Junior
Kyla Gogel had a home run and two RBIs, while sophomore
MacKenzi Dorsam went 2-of-4 with an RBI.
Freshman
Sarah Owens earned the win after allowing one run off eight hits in four innings of work. She racked up five strikeouts as she improved to 1-0 on the year. Jankowski (1) earned the save after allowing one run off two hits in three innings of action.
The Eagles scored six unanswered runs to overcome an early 3-0 deficit against Tiffin. The Dragons scored three in the top half of the first inning, but the Eagles scored one in the bottom of the first and five in the second to build a 6-3 advantage.
Dorsam had an RBI-single in the first frame to get the Eagles on the scoreboard, while freshman
Toni Braun's RBI-groundout in the second put USI up, 2-1.
USI added to the lead when Harmening hit a three-run double in the next at-bat. Jankowski ended the five-run frame with an RBI-single.
Harmening (8-2) rebounded from a shaky start in the circle to fan six batters en route to her team-best eighth win. She scattered eight hits and a walk throughout seven innings of work.
The Eagles, who improved to 6-0 against the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 8-2 against the Midwest Region, return to action Saturday at noon when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
