KISSIMMEE, Fla.—Sophomore
Brooke Harmening and freshman
Sarah Owens each recorded complete-game shutouts Wednesday as the University of Southern Indiana softball team earned an 8-0 win over Saint Cloud State University and a 4-0 triumph over Midwest Region foe Ferris State University at the Rebel Spring Games.
Harmening (7-2) allowed just one hit and three base runners in the Screaming Eagles' victory over Saint Cloud State (13-10) in the opener.
Junior
Kelsey Jankowski, who had four RBIs, drove in a run in the top of the first inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. She had a three-run double in USI's six-run fourth frame that staked the Eagles to a comfortable 7-0 advantage.
USI (10-5) sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and got RBIs from junior
Teri Newmaster as well as sophomores
MacKenzi Dorsam and
Mollie Thomas.
Harmening, who racked up seven strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle, capped off the Eagles' scoring with a solo home run to lead off the sixth set as USI concluded the win in six innings via the eight-run rule.
In its second game, USI scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to provide Owens with all the support she would need against Ferris State (6-2).
Harmening drove in the first tally on a fielder's choice, while freshman
Kaitlyn England put the Eagles in front by a pair of scores with a two-out, RBI-single to leftfield. Junior
Kyla Gogel followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Eagles a commanding four-run cushion.
Owens (3-2) scattered seven hits and three walks throughout seven innings to earn her first complete-game shutout of her collegiate career. She recorded four strikeouts in the win.
The Eagles conclude the Rebel Spring Games Thursday when they take on Minnesota State University Moorhread at 8 a.m. (CDT) and Midwest Region foe Tiffin University at 10 a.m. The USI-Tiffin contest is the second meeting between the two teams this year, with the Eagles claiming the first decision, 6-4, at the USI Spring Classic.
