KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with the University of Illinois Springfield Monday. USI won the first game, 2-1, while the Prairie Stars took game two, 10-0, in five innings.
USI (8-5, 2-2 GLVC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by sophomore MacKenzie Dorsam in the top of the third inning in game one.
The Prairie Stars (7-7, 3-1 GLVC) capitalized on an error in the last part of the fourth frame to tie the contest at a run apiece, but junior
Lauren Hatfield had an RBI-single in the sixth inning to put the Screaming Eagles back on top, 2-1.
Sophomore pitcher
Brooke Harmening (6-2) racked up eight strike outs and allowed just one unearned run off four hits as she earned the complete-game victory.
In game two, Illinois Springfield scored four times in the fourth inning and three times in the second frame to build a commanding 7-0 advantage. The Prairie Stars added a run in the third frame and two more in the fourth inning as they won via the eight-run rule.
Freshman
Sarah Owens (2-2) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs, five earned, off three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings of work.
Offensively, the Eagles had just three hits and stranded six runners on base. Illinois Springfield, meanwhile, racked up seven hits and had five stolen bases as it won its third GLVC contest in four tries.
USI begins the Rebel Spring Games Tuesday at 8 a.m. (CDT) when it takes on Southwest Minnesota State University. The Eagles also take on Adelphi University Tuesday at 10 a.m.
