EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team was held to a season-low 12 field goals in a 58-40 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon in the Physical Activities Center.
USI (16-5, 8-5 GLVC), which suffered its first loss at the PAC in 13 tries this season, struggled from the start of the contest as the Rangers used a stifling defensive effort to earn their second win over the Screaming Eagles this season.
UW-Parkside (14-7, 8-5 GLVC) had a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the contest to establish an eight-point lead early in the contest. The Eagles chiseled away at the deficit to tie the game on a pair of occasions later in the period, but the Rangers reeled off 11 straight points in the final two minutes and led 29-20 at the break.
The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first 10 minutes of the second period, with USI cutting the deficit to eight points and the Rangers pushing their advantage back to 10 on several junctures, but an 8-0 outburst put the Rangers up, 45-29, with nine minutes left in the game.
A three-point play by sophomore forward/center
Mary O'Keefe and a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Libby Ogden gave the Eagles a glimmer of hope as they shrunk their deficit to 11 (46-35) with less than five minutes to play, but UW-Parkside senior guard Sierra West's three-pointer moments later took the wind out of the Eagles' sails.
USI shot just 29.3 percent from the field, including 26.3 percent (5-19) in the final 20 minutes. UW-Parkside, which shot 42.6 percent from the floor, out-rebounded USI 40-24 and forced the Eagles' into an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers.
The Rangers turned USI's offensive miscues into 25 points, while the Eagles produced just 12 points off UW-Parkside's 21 turnovers.
O'Keefe had 13 points and five rebounds to lead the Eagles, while junior guard
Stephanie Carpenter and sophomore forward/center
Anna Hackert added nine points and six rebounds, respectively. West paced the Rangers with 16 points, nine of which came from three-point range.
USI returns to action Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (CST) when it visits the University of Indianapolis. Thursday's game is the first of three straight road games for the Eagles, and their final three road outings of the regular season.
