EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore pitcher/first baseman
Brooke Harmening went a combined 5-of-6 at the plate and tossed a complete-game shutout as the University of Southern Indiana softball team recorded wins over Midwest Region foes Tiffin University and Ohio Dominican University Sunday at the USI Softball Field.
Harmening (4-1) allowed just one hit and had five strike outs as the Screaming Eagles defeated Ohio Dominican, 1-0, to conclude the USI Spring Classic with a 3-0 record. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles.
Sophomore second baseman/catcher
MacKenzi Dorsam hit a solo home run over the rightfield fence with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to provide all the offense USI would need to earn its fourth straight win and its second triumph over the Panthers in as many days.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles used a five-run inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and eventually defeat Tiffin, 6-4.
A leadoff walk coupled with an error in the top of the first inning led to a 2-0 Tiffin lead. The Dragons took advantage of a leadoff error in the second inning to score two more runs and build a 4-0 advantage.
Back-to-back singles to begin the last part of the second inning got the Screaming Eagles going offensively. The Eagles benefitted from a pair of errors and two hit batters in the second inning as they scored five times to build a one-run advantage.
Junior second baseman
Lindsay Kivett and freshman shortstop
Janna Green each had RBIs in the frame as USI took control of the contest.
USI (6-3) tacked on another run in the third inning when freshman outfielder
Kaitlyn England doubled in a run.
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Owens (2-1) earned the victory after recording six strikeouts. Owens (2-1) surrendered four runs, two earned, off nine hits in seven innings of work.
USI returns to action March 9 when it travels to Quincy, Illinois, to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Quincy University. The doubleheader is slated to begin at noon.
