EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team could not bounce back from a woeful first-half effort as the Screaming Eagles suffered a 58-45 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to McKendree University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
McKendree (8-17, 3-14 GLVC) used an 11-0 run to build an early 13-3 advantage and never looked back. The Bearcats benefitted from a 14-of-16 effort at the charity stripe and a 29-16 advantage on the glass in the opening period to build a 32-15 halftime cushion.
The Eagles (17-9, 9-8 GLVC) shot just 18 percent in the opening period and were 1-of-13 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
.
USI trailed by as many as 21 in the second half before trimming McKendree's lead to 11 with three minutes to play, but that was as close as the Eagles would get.
Junior guard
Ariel Barnes paced the Eagles with 20 points and six rebounds, while fellow classmate
Aubrey Minix finished with nine points.
The Eagles' leading scorers, sophomore forward/center
Anna Hackert and junior guard
Stephanie Carpenter, were held to a combined 0-of-14 from the field. Hackert, who finished with one point and six rebounds, fouled out of the contest in the second half.
Sophomore guard Caty Ponce finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists to lead the Bearcats, who split the regular-season series with the Eagles.
McKendree finished the game by going 24-of-33 from the charity stripe, compared to just 1-of-2 free throws by the Eagles. The Bearcats out-rebounded USI, 54-31.
USI concludes the 2012-13 regular season Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan College at the PAC. GLVC Tournament play begins March 3.
