DECATUR, Ala.—Sophomore first baseman
Mollie Thomas had a one-out, RBI-single in the top of the seventh inning to lift the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 1-0 victory over Midwest Region foe Wayne State University in its season-opener Friday in the Charger Chillout.
Junior designated player
Kelsey Jankowski had a one-out double in the seventh and was lifted for a pinch runner—freshman
Toni Braun. Braun reached third on a passed ball; then scored three pitches later when Thomas hit a looping single on a 3-2 count into shallow centerfield.
Sophomore pitcher
Brooke Harmening surrendered just three hits and four base runners as she earned the complete-game shutout.
Thomas came back in USI's second game to record a two-out, two-run single in the top of the third inning, but the University of North Alabama plated nine unanswered runs to defeat the Screaming Eagles, 13-5, in five innings.
Freshman pitcher
Sarah Owens, who had an RBI in USI's four-run third inning, was charged with the loss after surrendering eight runs off seven hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
USI (1-1) struck first against the Lions as sophomore catcher/infielder
MacKenzi Dorsam had a run-scoring double in the first inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
North Alabama came back with a run in the bottom of the first; then scored three times in the second to build a 4-1 cushion. The Eagles answered with four runs in the third, all of which came with two outs, but the Lions scored three in the bottom of the third, five in the fourth, and another in the fifth.
Junior catcher
Lauren Hatfield also had an RBI-single in the third inning for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they take on Franklin Pierce University at 11 a.m. and the University of West Alabama at 1 p.m.
