Anna Hackert and senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter combined for 40 points as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team breezed past Asbury University, 87-46, in its regular-season opener Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (1-0), which used a 14-2 run early in the opening period to establish control of the contest, drained seven three-pointers in the first 20 minutes as it claimed a 50-24 halftime advantage.
Hackert, who had nine rebounds, scored 16 of her 20 points in the opening frame, while Carpenter added eight of her 20 points in the first period.
The Screaming Eagles, who shot 42.5 percent from the field in the opening half, got scoring contributions from eight different players in the first frame, including eight from junior guard
Libby Ogden and six from junior guard
Autumn Miller.
Ogden and Miller each finished with eight points, as did senior guard
Ariel Barnes and senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi.
Defensively, the Eagles forced Asbury into 24 turnovers and held the visiting Eagles to just 30.2 percent from the field. USI also out-rebounded Asbury, 48-37, and finished with 21 assists.
USI returns to action next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. as it hosts Davis & Elkins in a Midwest Region contest at the PAC.
