EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Five University of Southern Indiana women's basketball players reached double figures as the Screaming Eagles posted a 109-61 victory over Midwest Region foe Salem International University Friday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (3-0) wasted little time establishing control of the contest as a layup by junior forward/center
Anna Hackert and a three-pointer by senior guard
Stephanie Carpenter staked the Eagles to a 5-0 lead 34 seconds into the contest.
Junior guard
Autumn Miller got a steal following a quick Salem International timeout and took the ball in for a layup as the Eagles extended their advantage to 7-0 less than a minute into the contest.
USI, which used a 10-2 run later in the half to spread its advantage to 17 with two minutes to play in the opening period, took a 49-33 lead into the break. The Eagles, who shot a blistering 72.7 percent from the field in the last 20 minutes, scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second half and did not look back as they cruised to the 48-point victory.
The Eagles' 109 points marked the first time since November of 2011—a 109-42 win over Mid-Continent University—that USI has reached triple-digits on the scoreboard. USI, which drained 12 three-pointers, shot 62.7 percent for the game and held the Fighting Tigers to a .381 shooting percentage.
USI, which outscored the Tigers 42-24 in the paint, held a decided edge in bench points as the Eagles' reserves outscored Salem International's reserves, 53-14.
Hackert led the Eagles with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Carpenter finished with 10 points and four assists. Senior forward/center
Nicole Hazemi added 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Miller chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.
Senior guard
Jessica Parker rounded out the Eagles' double-figure scorers as she drained three shots from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes to finish with 11 points and a game-high six assists.
Senior center Porcha Davis led the Tigers with a game-high 24 points, while junior forward Whitney McCargo added 14 points and five rebounds.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan College in a Midwest Region battle at the PAC.
