Eagles set for first GLVC road trip

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team plays its first contest outside the Physical Activities Center in nine games Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when it visits the University of Illinois Springfield for a Great Lakes Valley Conference bout. The Screaming Eagles conclude their first conference road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. when they visit Quincy University.

USI (10-0, 2-0 GLVC), which is one of nine undefeated teams in the NCAA Division II, is coming off wins over the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University this past week at the PAC.

Sophomore forward/center Anna Hackert, the GLVC Player of the Week, paced the Eagles with 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per appearance. Hackert, who is averaging 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in the second periods of USI's last three contests, racked up 20 points to go with a career-high 15 rebounds and five assists in USI's 69-63 victory over defending GLVC Tournament champion Maryville.

Hackert, who leads USI with 13.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per outing, is one of three Eagles that are averaging double digits in the scoring column. Junior guard Stephanie Carpenter and sophomore forward/center Mary O'Keefe are chipping in 11.5 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.

O'Keefe, who added 18 points and seven rebounds in the win over Maryville, averaged 14.5 points in USI's two GLVC wins a week ago.

Illinois Springfield (4-6, 1-1 GLVC) earned a 19-point win in its conference-opener last week against McKendree University, but suffered a 65-55 setback at Bellarmine University in its most recent outing.

Junior guard/forward Megan Bergerud and junior guard Alyssa Palmer led the Prairie Stars with 18 and 15 points, respectively, in their loss to Bellarmine. Bergerud leads Illinois Springfield with 13.1 points per appearance, while junior forward Elizabeth Kelly is chipping in 7.7 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds per contest.

USI leads the all-time series with Illinois Springfield, 8-0, after defeating the Prairie Stars, 75-44, two years ago in Springfield, Illinois. The Eagles trail the all-time series with Quincy, 19-17, and are 7-16 against the Lady Hawks since 2000 after falling, 92-81, two years ago in Quincy, Illinois.

The Hawks (4-6, 2-0 GLVC), who host Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday, have won three straight games, including contests at Bellarmine and McKendree, after suffering six losses in their first seven outings.

Sophomore forward Kelly Buresh and junior guard Lucy Cramsey lead the Hawks with 12.9 and 11.8 points per game, respectively. Cramsey leads the Hawks with 8.5 rebounds per contest after recording a team-best 17 points and 18 rebounds in their 75-56 win at McKendree Saturday.
