USI bats stymied by Bellarmine

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team had its offense stymied by Bellarmine University pitching as it dropped a doubleheader Friday evening, 4-1 and 3-1, at the USI Baseball Field.  USI sees its record go to 14-15 overall and 5-11 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 17-10, 9-3 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles did not get off to a good start in the 4-1 opening-game loss, allowing all of the Knights' run in the first and third innings. BU right-hander Philip Forbis shutdown USI hitters for 6.2 innings before allowing the bullpen for the final seven outs preserve the victory.
 
USI got its only run off the Bellarmine pitching staff in the seventh inning when junior shortstop Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a ground out by senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana).  Rounder had moved into scoring position after doubling to lead off the inning and advancing to third on a ground out by senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri).
 
On the mound for the Eagles, freshman right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Wright (4-3) was charged for all four of the Knight run on eight hits and a walk.
 
The USI bullpen kept the Eagles in the opener as junior right-hander Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky), junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois), and sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) gave them five scoreless innings. Lady and Mulvaney had a pair of strikeout each, while Carver struck out one of the two batters that he faced.
 
The nightcap started the same as the first game with Bellarmine scoring first with a tally in the opening frame. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Knights until the Eagles knotted the score bottom of the sixth. USI evened the score when White crossed the plate on a wild pitch after singling to lead off the inning and advancing to third on walks by Weinzapfel and  Rounder.
 
The Knights would pull back ahead in the second extra frame with two runs off of senior right-hander Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri). Dill (2-5) took the loss, allowing the two runs on two hits and two walks in his two innings of work.
 
USI's chances for a two-out comeback ended in the bottom of the ninth when Weinzapfel grounded out with runners on second and third. The Eagles left 12 runners on base in the game, including two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
 
In addition to Dill on the mound in game two, junior right-hander Matthew Davidson (St. Charles, Missouri) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, while senior starting left-hander Scott Cole (Patrick , Virginia) went the first four innings allowing a tally on five hits and three walks. Cole also struck out six batters in getting the no decisions.
 
Overall at the plate for USI in the game, the Eagles had 13 hits in 62 plate appearances and four of those came off White's bat. White also had a double and a triple in the four hits and scored a run.
 
The Eagles and the Knights conclude the four-game series Sunday at the USI Baseball Field Friday. The first pitch Sunday is noon.
