EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished a four-game with a doubleheader split at 24th-ranked University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Greyhounds took the opener, 6-3, but the Screaming Eagles bounced back to take the nightcap, 7-4.

USI sees its record go to 24-22 overall and 14-18 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 34-12, 23-7 GLVC.

After the Greyhounds struck first with a tally in the nightcap, the Screaming Eagles put together a three-run rally in the top of the second to lead, 3-1. Senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) opened with a double and tied the score, 1-1, on a RBI single by junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana).

Rounder would cross the plate with the lead run three batters later on a RBI ground out by senior rightfielder Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana). Senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana), who had reached on a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on the Chestnut ground out, gave USI a 3-1 advantage when senior catcher Adam Hensley (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) reached on a fielding error.

USI would increase the lead to 4-1 and 5-1 with single runs in the third and the fourth. Senior leftfielder Brennan Malham (Auburn, Indiana) hit his second home run of the day and his third of the season in the third for USI's fourth run of the game.

Hensley, who made his first career start at catcher in the nightcap, crossed the plate with the fifth and the eventual winning run in the fourth. He doubled with one out, advanced to third on a single by sophomore centerfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana), and scored on a single by senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana).

UIndy cut the USI advantage to 5-3 with runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth, but USI would get the runs back in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Mooney and Malham to take a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Greyhounds would strike for one more run before the Eagles wrapped up the 7-4 win.

Sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) posted his third win of the year after going the first six innings. Mulvaney (3-2) allowed six hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out three.

The USI bullpen took over for Mulvaney in the seventh with junior right-hander Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) and junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) finishing the game. Lady pitched 1.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits, while Carver threw 1.2 innings and allowed a tally on two hits in posting his second save of the year.

In the opener, the Eagles opened the scoring with a run in the third inning when Malham hit his second home run of the season. Malham finished the doubleheader with four hits, two home runs, a double, and three RBIs.

The 1-0 lead would last until the bottom of third when the Greyhounds scored all of the runs they would need in a four-run rally.

USI cut the three-run deficit to one, 4-3, in the top of the sixth with a pair of tallies. Senior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) provided the rally's offense, providing a RBI double and scoring on a RBI single by Rounder.

The Greyhounds, however, responded with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the sixth to re-extend the led to three runs and the 6-3 final.

On the mound, senior right-hander Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) lasted 2.2 innings in taking the loss. Dill (4-7) allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks, while striking out three.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field next weekend to conclude the 2012 regular season by hosting Saint Joseph's College for a four-game series. USI Senior Day is scheduled for the noon single game on May 6.
