EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept by 24th-ranked University of Indianapolis, 8-0 and 2-1, Friday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI sees its record go to 23-21 overall and 13-17 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 33-11, 22-6 GLVC.
In the opener, UIndy right-hander Donovan Drake scattered two hits and shutout the Screaming Eagles, 8-0. The Greyhounds scored four runs in the third, three in the fifth, and one in the eighth before shutting USI down for a final time in the ninth.
USI senior right-hander
Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia) started for the Eagles and took the loss. Cole (5-3) allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits and five walks. He also struck out two batters.
The three Greyhound runs in the fifth were allowed by senior right-hander
Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri). Dill allowed the three runs on three hits and a walk before giving way to junior right-hander
Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky).
Lady pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to sophomore left-hander
Jordan Lorenzo (Seymour, Indiana), who allowed the run in the eighth on two hits.
The nightcap saw the Greyhounds score all the runs that they would need in the third and the fourth innings to defeat the Eagles, 2-1. USI tried to erase the 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning, cutting the lead in half, but left the bases loaded and six base runners on in the game.
The Eagles only rally of the day started with two outs when senior designated hitter
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) singled and advanced to third when junior third baseman
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) was hit by a pitch and senior leftfielder
Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois) walked. Mooney scored when senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) reached on a RBI walk. Senior first baseman
Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) fouled out to end the inning and leave the bags loaded.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) took the loss in his third complete game of the game. Wright (5-4) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks.
The Eagles and Greyhounds are scheduled to conclude the four-game series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader. Saturday's doubleheader could be moved to Sunday at 11 a.m. if the heavy rains in the forecast arrive tomorrow morning.
