USI strikes early, defeats OCU, 9-3

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team struck for eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 9-3 victory Tuesday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record go to 23-19 overall, while OCU falls to 14-23.
 
The Screaming Eagles soared out to a 2-0 lead after posting a tally in each of the first two innings. Junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) put USI on the scoreboard with a RBI single in the first inning, while junior rightfielder B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) reached and scored on two OCU errors in the second inning.
 
After the Mighty Oaks tied the score with two runs in the top of the third, USI sent 12 men to the plate and exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the third. Senior third baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) led USI during in the rally with a two-run single.
 
Eagles' senior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) set the USI all-time record for doubles with the 60th of his career during the third inning rally. The RBI double broke the record that had been held by Mike Peerman since 2000.
 
The Eagles would post a ninth run in the fifth when senior catcher Jarrod Rose (Mishawaka, Indiana), who had two hits, scored on a RBI single by senior outfielder Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois).  OCU scored the final run of the contest in the eighth for the 9-3 final.
 
On the mound, USI junior right-hander Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) recorded the win in relief. Lady (2-1) scattered three hits in four innings, striking out a season-high five batters.
 
Junior right-hander Keith Greer (Lowell, Indiana) started for USI, allowing two runs on three hits in the first three innings.  Freshman right-hander Jonathon Cain (Columbus, Indiana) and junior right-hander Matthew Davidson (St. Charles, Missouri) finished the final two innings for the Eagles.
 
USI hits the road in the Great Lakes Valley Conference this weekend when it travels to the University of Indianapolis for a four-game series. The first pitch for Friday's single game in Indianapolis has been changed to 1 p.m. (CDT).
