EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished the four-game series with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with a doubleheader split Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles took the opener, 6-1, but dropped the nightcap, 6-4, to the Rangers.

USI sees its record go to 18-17 overall and 9-13 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside goes to 13-22, 6-16 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles spotted the Rangers a first-inning run before scoring four unanswered runs to take the opener, 6-1. USI tied the game with a run in the second, took the lead with a pair of tallies in the third, extended the lead with a run in the fifth, and sealed the victory with two more tallies in the seventh.

Senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) singled in the first USI run in the second to make the score 1-1. The Eagles took the lead when junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) doubled in sophomore centerfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) with the first of his three runs in the game. White would cross the plate one batter later when sophomore rightfielder Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) tripled to right center to make the score 3-1.

USI upped the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when White crushed his second double of the game to score Wannemuehler from first base.

Wannemuehler started USI's two-run rally in the seventh with a single and scored on a double by senior third baseman Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois). Malham crossed the plate with the final run of the game when White recorded his third RBI of the contest on a single up the middle.

White finished the first game as the USI leader at the plate with three hits, a run scored, and three RBIs.

On the mound, senior right-handed Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) gave the Eagles a strong outing to earn his third win of the year and his first victory since the middle of March 7. Dill (3-6) allowed the first inning run and scattered five hits, while striking out a career-high 11 batters. The senior right-hander set down 18 of the last 20 batters that he faced after allowing the first inning run.

The nightcap started with a bang for the Eagles, who put up a three spot in the first inning. Wannemuehler started the game with a walk and scored two batters later on a RBI single to right center by White to give USI the 1-0 lead.

White would come around to score the second run of the innings when senior designated hitter Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) reached on an error. USI ended the inning with a 3-0 advantage when Weinzapfel scored on a fielder's choice by Kaczmarski.

The Rangers would rally back to take the lead, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings. UW-Parkside chased USI sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) (2-1) in the fifth after he all the four runs, two earned on eight hits.

The Rangers extended their lead to three with a two-run seventh inning to lead 6-3. The Eagles tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, scoring once after putting the first two men on, but stranded runners on the corners to end the game with a 6-4 loss.

In addition to the stranded runners in the ninth, the Eagles missed a chance to score in the third when they loaded the bases with one out and in the fourth when they had runners at first and third to lead off the inning.

Vance, who was making his first appearance in today's doubleheader since injuring a knee against the University of Illinois Springfield, had two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap to lead five players with two hits each.

The Eagles continue the homestand at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College at the USI Baseball Field. USI and KWC split the first two games of the series in Owensboro with Panthers winning 10-9 and the Eagles taking the nightcap, 4-2. USI leads the all-time series with the Panthers, 88-63.
