EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team posted its first doubleheader sweep since March 24 by taking a pair from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 10-2 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which has won its last three, sees its record go to 17-16 overall and 8-12 in the GLVC, while UW goes to 12-21, 5-15 GLVC.
Screaming Eagles senior left-handed starter
Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia) struck out 10 batters while allowing one run on one hit through eight innings to lead USI to a 10-2 victory in game one. Cole (4-2) set down 14 of the first 18 batters, picking off two of the runners, before allowing the Rangers' only hit in the sixth.
USI freshman right-hander Jonathon Cain (Columbus, Indiana) finished the game for Cole and allowed a run on a walk and two hit batters.
At the plate, the Eagles did all of the damage to the Rangers in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. USI senior third baseman
Brennan Malham (Aubrun, Illinois) drove in the Eagles' first run with an RBI single, while junior catcher
Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) made the score 2-0 on his third inning RBI single.
USI blew the game open with a five-run fifth that included a RBI triple by sophomore centerfielder
Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) to make the score 7-0. The Eagles sealed the victory with three more tallies in the seventh, capped off by a two-triple by junior shortstop
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana).
Rounder finished the game with a team-high three RBIs, followed by Malham, who drove in a pair.
In the nightcap, the Eagles scored three times in the top of the second and held on to defeat the Rangers, 3-2. Senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) drove in the first run with a RBI single to left and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior rightfielder
B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Senior first baseman
Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana), who had reached on a walk, also scored the eventual game-winning run on Willis' sacrifice fly when UW-Parkside rightfielder Corey Stonelake threw the ball into the USI dugout trying to cut down Martin at third base.
The Eagles would hold onto the 3-0 lead until the bottom of the third when the Rangers pushed their first run across. UW-Parkside cut the USI advantage to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but would not get another runner in scoring position.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) threw a complete game while posting his team-high fifth win of the year. Wright (5-3) allowed two unearned runs on four hits, while striking out four batters in seven innings.
The Eagles and the Rangers conclude the four-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader. The conversion of the four-game series against UW-Parkside from road contests to home games puts USI in the middle of a 14-game homestand after the four-game set with Bellarmine University last weekend.
