EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team lost a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games to Saint Joseph's College Sunday at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles lost the opener, 4-2, in 11 innings before losing the second game, 5-2.
After the two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 10 innings, Saint Joseph's capitalized on two USI errors to score four times in the top half of the 11th inning to take  a 4-0 lead.
USI (20-14, 11-9 GLVC), which has lost five straight games, got an RBI-double from sophomore pitcher/designated player
Kelsey Jankowski and an RBI-single from freshman second baseman
Kara Werner in the home half of the 11th frame to cut the Pumas' lead in half.
Saint Joseph's (22-10, 13-5 GLVC), however, got sophomore centerfielder
Teri Newmaster, who was a combined 4-of-10 on the day, to fly out to leftfield for the final out of the contest.
Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening was tagged with the loss despite a strong effort. Harmening (11-9) allowed just five hits through the first 10 innings, but gave up four unearned runs off five hits in the 11th frame.
The Eagles had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the contest, especially in the 10th inning when they had the bases loaded with one out. USI, however, stranded 11 runners on base, including seven in extra innings.
In game two, USI spotted the Pumas a run in the top half of the second, but an RBI-single off the bat of Jankowski in the bottom of the frame evened the score.
Saint Joseph's, though, used an inside-the-park home run off the bat of sophomore outfielder Kylie Weeks in the third stanza to score two runs and build a 3-1 advantage.
Junior shortstop/pitcher
Stephanie Bittner's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning cut the deficit in half, but the Pumas tacked on two more runs in the seventh frame to extend its cushion to 5-2.
USI got runners at the corners to lead off the seventh frame, but Saint Joseph's junior hurler Sarah Franklin, who earned the save in game one, retired the next three batters to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard and preserve the game-two victory.
Jankowski (5-1) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, off eight hits in seven innings of work.
USI returns to action Friday when it travels to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph's in a GLVC doubleheader.
