MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 27
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team bounced back to end its road trip with a 12-4 victory over the University of Montevallo Wednesday evening in Montevallo, Alabama. USI rises to 7-4 overall in 2012, while Montevallo goes to 11-10 to start the spring campaign.
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the opening inning when junior shortstop
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) singled junior rightfielder
B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) across the plate with the first run of the game. Willis had moved into scoring position with a one-out double to right field.
After the Falcon tied the score 1-1 in the second, the Eagles regained the lead in the fifth with a pair of manufactured runs. Senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) walked and was bunted around to third before scoring on a bunt single by Willis to make the score, 2-1.
USI doubled its lead two batters later to 3-1 when sophomore centerfielder
Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher
Colton White (Springfield, Illinois).
The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth, scoring six times to increase their lead to 9-1. The six-run sixth was highlighted and capped off by a two-run blast by White. The home run was White's first of the season and as an Eagle.
Montevallo cut the USI margin to 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but USI rallied back with three-runs in the top of the seventh and extended the lead to 12-3. Rounder pushed the USI lead back to seven with a sacrifice fly, while White drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the game with a single to center field.
Rounder finished the game four-for-five with three RBIs and one run scored, while White was three-for-four with five RBIs and a run scored.
The Falcons would get one more run in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring of the 12-4 final.
On the mound, senior right-hander
Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) worked 5.1 innings to earn his second win of the year. Dill (2-2) allowed eight hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out one.
USI junior right-hander
Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) and sophomore right-hander
Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) finished the game for the Eagles. Lady gave up one run on three hits, while striking out three in 1.2 innings of work. Mulvaney threw a scoreless final two innings, allowing only one hit.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field March 9 and March 11 to play the University of Illinois Springfield in the Dunn Hospitality Tournament.
