EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 27
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team did not get off to a good start in its two-game road swing at the University of Montevallo, losing 12-5 Tuesday evening in Montevallo, Alabama. USI falls to 6-4 overall in 2012, while Montevallo goes to 11-9 to start the spring campaign.
The Falcons struck for eight runs in the first four innings before the Screaming Eagles could get the bats going. USI cut the eight-run deficit in half with four tallies in the top of the fifth.
USI senior first baseman
Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) and sophomore centerfielder
Brad Wannemuehler started the fifth inning rally with back-to-back singles. Martin and Wannemuehler advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-run single by senior pinch hitter
Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana).

Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri), who had reached on a walk, scored the third and fourth runs of the inning on a two-run double by senior third baseman
Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois). Montevallo rallied to take back the USI gains with a tally in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to regain its eight-run lead, 12-4.
USI pulled back to within seven runs, 12-5, in the ninth when Malham drove in his third run of the game.
On the mound, junior left-hander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, in three innings of work. Freshman right-handers Justin Alhbrand (Evansville, Indiana) and
Jonathan Cain (Columbus, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles.
USI concludes the two-game series with Montevallo Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field March 9 and March 11 to play the University of Illinois Springfield in the Dunn Hospitality Tournament.
