Eagles hope to get back on track at NKU

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team hopes to get its 10-game road swing back on track when it starts a four-game series at Northern Kentucky University this weekend in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The series schedule has a 2 p.m. (CDT) single-game Friday; noon (CDT) doubleheader Saturday; and 11 a.m. (CDT) single-game Sunday.

Game coverage for the series, including live stats and/or audio broadcasts, is available at gousieagles.com.

The Screaming Eagles (13-8, 4-4 GLVC) have seen highs and lows to start the 10-game road trip. The trip started on a good note with the Eagles sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Illinois Springfield last Saturday. USI, however, took a wrong turn Sunday when it dropped a twinbill to Quincy University.

Senior designated hitter Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) led the Eagles at the plate during the first portion of the road swing by hitting .545  with a home run and eight RBIs. Junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) was USI's top arm over the weekend after posting his third win of the year with a complete game victory at UIS.

For the season, senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) has the Eagles top batting average at .358. Sophomore infielder Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) is the team's best RBI-producer with 16, while junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) is one behind with 15 RBIs.

Rounder also is tied with sophomore outfield Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) for the team-lead in home runs with two each.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Ben Wright has a team-high four wins and is near perfect 4-1 this spring. Wright also has a team-best 2.79 ERA.

After splitting the first eight games of the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule, the Eagles hope to get back on track and gain some momentum against NKU (13-9, 6-2 GLVC). The Norse have won six-straight games in the conference since dropping a doubleheader to Quincy to open GLVC action.

The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Norse, 48-41, after taking three of four from NKU last spring at the USI Baseball Field. USI also has won eight of the last 10 meetings with NKU since 2009. This week's four-game series will be the final GLVC match-up between USI and NKU with the Norse moving the NCAA Division I's Atlantic Sun Conference next year.

NATIONAL RANKING NOTE: USI fell out of the Collegiate Baseball/NCAA Division II Top 30 and the NCBWA Top 25 polls this week. The Eagles remained ranked 27th in the College Baseball Lineup Top 30 poll.
