QUINCY, Ill. – The 27
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team did not end the first weekend of it road trip on a high note as it was swept by Quincy University Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. Quincy out slugged USI in the opener, 20-11, and edged out the Screaming Eagles, 3-1, in the nightcap.
The Eagles see their record go to 13-8 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC, while the Hawks go to 12-8, 5-1 GLVC.
In the opener, Quincy exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat USI in a football-like score of 20-11. The Hawks pounded out 24 hits in tallying 20 runs.
The first game did start in USI's favor when junior catcher
Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) singled in junior leftfielder
B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) to give the Eagles a 1-0 first inning lead. The Hawks, however, responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage.
Quincy increased the margin to five runs with two more runs in the bottom of the third before USI could get the bats going again. Senior third baseman
Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois) crossed the plate with USI's second run on an error, while senior designated hitter
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Illinois) scored on an RBI single by senior first baseman
Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) to cut the Quincy lead to 6-3.
Mooney would knot the score at 6-6 with a three-run home run in the sixth after White and Malham had walked to start the inning. The Hawks regained the lead in the bottom half with a pair of tallies to go back in front, 8-6, and put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the seventh.
After Quincy added two more tallies in the bottom of the eighth to run its lead to 20-6, USI chipped away at the margin with a five-run rally on a three-run home run by sophomore rightfielder
Brent Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) and a two-run single by Mooney for the 20-11 final. Mooney finished the opener with three hits and five RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and complete the doubleheader sweep, 3-1.
The Eagles struck first again to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) singled in sophomore shortstop
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana). Quincy responded with a tally in the bottom of the third and the score would remain 1-1 until the Hawks scored the deciding runs in the fifth. Kaczmarski led USI at the plate during game two, going three-for-three with the RBI.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) suffered his first loss of the season. Wright (4-1) allowed three runs on 10 hits, while striking out two.
USI continues the road trip March 30-April 1 in Highland Heights, Kentucky, when the Eagles visit the Norse of Northern Kentucky University for a four-game series. The Eagles conclude the road trip April 4 when they cross the Ohio River to play a doubleheader against the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
