EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished its six-game homestand with a doubleheader split with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI posted an 11-0 shutout in the opener, while UMSL claimed the nightcap, 5-3.
The Screaming Eagles saw their record go to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC, while the Triton go to 7-7, 1-3 GLVC.
The Eagles won the opener by scoring 11 times on 12 hits as they soared over the Tritons, 11-0. USI scored five times in the second, once in the fifth, and five more times in the seventh to post their 11
th win of the year.
Leading the way at the plate was senior second baseman
Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana), who had two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs, and first baseman
Todd Martin (Richmond, Indiana), who had two hits, a run scored, and three RBIs. Senior shortstop
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) also had a multi-RBI game, capping off the five-run second with a two-run double, while senior designated hitter
Brennan Malham (Auburn, Illinois) drove two by highlighting the five-run seventh with a two-run triple.
On the mound, freshman right-hander
Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) dominated the Tritons for eight innings to get his fourth win of the year. Wright (4-0) scattered five hits and struck out a season-high four batters in the victory.
The Eagles could not keep the bats going in the nightcap as the Tritons posted a 5-3 victory in game two.
UMSL started the scoring with a single tally in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 advantage. USI bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to knot things up at 2-2 when Vance single in Wannemuehler and scored when junior third baseman
Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) reached on an error.
The Tritons took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a three-run rally. The Eagles tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able push one run across when senior designated hitter
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) scored on a single by Martin.
Junior lefthander
Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) took the loss for USI in the nightcap. Carver (2-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings of work.
USI hits the road for the next 10 games, beginning Saturday with the University of Illinois Springfield. The road trip also includes a doubleheader March 25 at Quincy University, a four-game series March 30-April 1 at Northern Kentucky University, and a doubleheader April 4 at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The next home dates for the Eagles are April 6-7 when they host Bellarmine University at the USI Baseball Field.
