EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore hurler Madeline Brink tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 2-0 game-two victory and a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Drury University Sunday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. USI won the first game, 5-2, over the visiting Panthers.

After spotting Drury (15-6, 6-2 GLVC) a tally in the top of the first inning of game one, the Screaming Eagles answered with a run in the home half of the opening frame when junior shortstop Stephanie Bittner hit an RBI-double into the right-centerfield gap.

The Eagles (13-5, 6-0 GLVC) scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead as freshman pitcher Brooke Harmening hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence to lead the frame off and freshman first baseman Elizabeth Prince took home on an illegal pitch.

Drury, which entered Sunday's game with the best record in the GLVC West Division, cut the Eagles' lead in half with a tally in the sixth inning, but USI got a bases-loaded walk issued to sophomore centerfielder Teri Newmaster and an RBI-single off the bat of freshman second baseman Kara Werner to take a 5-2 cushion into the seventh inning.

Harmening (7-4), who had a double and scored on Werner's hit in the sixth inning, retired the Panthers in order in the seventh inning to record the complete-game victory. Harmening allowed two runs off seven hits, while striking out six batters.

In game two, the Eagles got an RBI-single off the bat of senior third baseman/designated player Kristen O'Haver in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore outfielder Kyla Gogel had an RBI-double in the fifth inning to provide the Eagles with an insurance run.

Brink (3-1) held the Panthers' lineup in check throughout the entirety of the contest as she scattered five hits and two walks throughout seven innings to record her first shutout of the season.

USI returns to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. when it hosts GLVC East Division rival Kentucky Wesleyan College in a doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Panthers (5-11, 4-4 GLVC) split a doubleheader with Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday in Owensboro, Kentucky.
