Eagles soar over Prairie Stars

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The 27th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team soared over the University of Illinois Springfield, 10-3, Friday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI rises to 9-4 overall, while UIS goes to 3-6 in 2012.
 
The Screaming Eagles took an early 4-0 lead with at tally in the first and three runs in the second. Junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) had the big hit in the first with an RBI single to score sophomore centerfielder Brad Wannemuehler (Evansville, Indiana) from second.
 
The three-run second was highlighted by a two-run single by senior second baseman Brennan Malham (Auburn, Indiana) to put USI up 3-0. Malham would cross the plate with the eventual game-winning run on an RBI double by junior rightfielder  B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) to make the score 4-0.
 
The Prairie Stars cut the margin to 4-3 with a run in the third and two more in the sixth. The Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more seventh to put the game away.
 
USI junior third baseman Reece Rounder had the big hit in the sixth, circling the base on a triple and an error. Willis scored ahead of Rounder after singling and stealing second and third.
 
On the mound, freshman right-hander Ben Wright (Newburgh, Indiana) went 5.2 innings to get his third victory of the year. Wright (3-0) allowed 10 hits and three runs, two earned, with a strike out.
 
Junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois), sophomore right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois), and junior right-hander Matthew Davidson (St. Charles, Missouri) finished the game with 3.1 scoreless innings.     
 
The Eagles open the 2012 GLVC schedule next weekend when they host the GLVC West Division's Maryville University March 17 and the University of Missouri-St. Louis March 18. The first pitch for both doubleheaders is noon.
