EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team held the No. 19 University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers to less than 60 points, but the Screaming Eagles shot just 29.3 percent from the field as they suffered a 56-40 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

After holding the visiting Rangers to just 30.1 percent from the field in the opening period, the Eagles saw UW-Parkside heat up in the second half. The Rangers connected on 14-of-25 shots (.560) in the last 20 minutes as they slowly and methodically pulled away for the victory.

The Rangers (18-4, 11-3 GLVC), who trailed 17-14 with four minutes to play in the first half, used a 7-1 run to close the opening stanza and take a 21-18 lead into the break.

UW-Parkside extended its lead to seven with a pair of buckets in the opening minute and led 28-20 three minutes into the final half.

USI (7-15, 1-13 GLVC) charged back, trimming the deficit to three-points with 14 minutes to play, but that was as close as the Eagles would get as the Rangers went on a 6-0 run to steal momentum and forge a 36-27 advantage.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Carpenter pulled the Eagles to within five (36-31) when she got a layup to fall through the net with less than 11 minutes to play, but a 12-4 UW-Parkside run once again turned the Eagles away.

Carpenter led the Eagles with 14 points, 12 of which came in the final period, while freshman forward/center Anna Hackert added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Senior forward Brittany Beyer led the Rangers with 17 points, while junior guard Jaleesa Trussell scored 11 points, all in the second half, and pulled down a team-high tying eight rebounds.

USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Lewis University for Homecoming and its WBCA “Play4Kay” game—fans are encouraged to dress in pink to help USI raise breast cancer awareness. The Flyers (6-16, 4-10 GLVC) recorded an 80-64 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky.
