INDIANAPOLIS—Junior guard Kristin Turner scored 25 points as the University of Indianapolis handed the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team a 72-53 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback Saturday afternoon.

USI (7-14, 1-12 GLVC) overcame an early deficit to grab a slim 15-14 advantage with less than eight minutes to play in the opening period.

The Greyhounds (16-5, 10-3 GLVC), however, used a 15-2 run throughout the next six minutes to take control of the contest.

“We had a long drought there in the first half where we couldn't get find a bucket and had too many turnovers,” Head Coach Rick Stein said. “A 4-0 run, a 6-0 run is manageable, but when you start getting into 12-0 runs, it just makes it tough to overcome.”

Sophomore guard Stephanie Carpenter drained a three-pointer in the waning moments of the opening period to bring the Screaming Eagles to within eight (30-22) at the break, but a 9-3 Indianapolis run to begin the second half put the Eagles into a 39-25 deficit.

Turner, who scored 14 points in the second period, had seven points during the run as the Greyhounds took control of the contest less than four minutes into the final stanza.

“She's a huge difference maker, no doubt about it,” Stein said of Turner. “She was like that at our place too. We put a couple different players on her and she still hurt us. She's a heck of a player.”

Three-pointers by Carpenter and senior guard Cootie Leeberg as well as a bucket by freshman forward Brooke Valentine cut the Eagles' deficit to eight points with 14:24 to play; but a three-pointer and two more free throws by Turner began an 8-0 run that turned momentum back into Indianapolis's favor.

USI trimmed a 58-42 deficit to 11 with less than six minutes to play as Carpenter, who finished with 13 points and three assists, scored five straight points. The Greyhounds, however, answered with an 11-0 spurt to turn the Eagles back.

“There's a lot of heart on this team,” Stein said. “No one's giving up. We've just had a lot of times this year where we've needed a bucket, a pass, or a stop and haven't gotten one.”

Valentine led the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard/forward Kristin Raker added 10 points and three rebounds.

Junior forward Nickole Gonser added 15 points and six rebounds for the Greyhounds, while sophomore forward/center Eliza Wortman finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

USI returns to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts No. 24 University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the Physical Activities Center.
