SOMERS, Wis.—Senior All-American
Dustin Emerick accounted for 28 points to lead the University of Southern Indiana men's track and field team to a seventh-place finish at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championships this weekend.
Emerick began the meet by helping lead the Screaming Eagles' distance medley relay team to a second-place finish Friday before returning later in the day to capture the 5,000-meter title with a league-meet record and NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 14 minutes, 39.09 seconds. He concluded the meet Saturday by finishing first in the 3,000 meters with a time of eight minutes, 30.07 seconds.
As a team, the Eagles had six top-five performances and 12 top-eight finishes as they concluded the meet with 53 points. Senior
Russell Farris and freshman Cody Comer were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the heptathlon, while sophomore
Thomas Snider and freshman
Dylan Rubenacker recorded fifth-place finishes in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.
USI's DMR squad also was comprised of juniors
Michael Callison and
Michael Jordan as well as freshman
Amanuel Medhane. Jordan was sixth in the 5,000 meters, while Callison was eighth in the mile and ninth in the 800 meters.
Freshman
Will Hogston added a sixth-place finish in the 3,000 meters, while sophomore
Samuel Rice finished eighth in the pole vault.
Emerick and Jordan both posted provisional qualifying times in the 5,000 meters throughout the year, though it's unlikely Jordan will make the final cut for the national meet. Emerick is on the bubble after entering the week ranked 13th in the event.
The NCAA II Indoor Championships are March 9-10 in Mankato, Minnesota, while USI opens the outdoor season March 30-31 at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Billy Smith Invitational in Vincennes, Indiana.
