EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior left-hander Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia) made his USI Baseball Field debut a memorable one by no-hitting Lake Erie College, 3-0, and give the 28th ranked Screaming Eagles a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon. USI, which won the opener 3-2, rises to 3-2 overall, while LEC falls to 0-2.

Cole used 121 pitches in the seven-inning no-hitter, striking out 10. The Storm had 11 batters reach base on seven walks, three fielder's choices, and one error.

The no-hitter was the first by an Eagle pitcher since Alex Thieroff and P.J. Thomas combined to hold Oakland City University hitless in 2008. The pitcher to go the distance in a no-hitter was Adam Vetter against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2006.

The Eagles provided Cole all of the offense he would need in the first inning when sophomore rightfielder Brent Weinzapfel scored on a RBI-single by junior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) to give USI a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 until the fourth when the Eagles would seal the victory with a pair of runs.

Senior first baseman Todd Martin (Rockport, Indiana) scored USI's second run of the game after leading off the fourth with a double and scampered home on an error after senior leftfielder Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana) singled to right. Chestnut crossed the plate with the final run of the game on senior third baseman Brennan Malham's (Auburn, Illinois) RBI single for the 3-0 final.

In the opener, the Eagles took advantage of three fourth-inning Storm errors to score two runs and sealed the game one 3-2 win with a tally.

Weinzapfel opened the scoring when he reached on an error and scored on a throwing error when Martin singled to right field. Martin, who advanced to third on Lake Erie's third error of the inning, scored on a RBI-single by senior second baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana).

USI increased the lead to 3-0 the next inning when junior leftfielder B.J. Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch. Willis had worked his way into scoring position after singling to lead off the fourth and advanced to third on a throwing error after stealing second.

On the mound, USI received a quality start from senior right-hander Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri). Dill (1-1) did not allow a run in 6.1 innings, surrendering only three hits and four walks. He also struck out five batters to earn his first win of the year.

USI junior left-hander Adam Carver (Arthur, Illinois) and freshman right-hander Justin Alhbrand (Evansville, Indiana) combined to get the Eagles through the final two outs of the seventh and the eighth inning without allowing a run.  Junior right-hander Matt Davidson (St. Charles, Missouri) finished the game for USI, allowing a pair of runs before earning his second save of the year.

The Eagles and the Storm finish the three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m.
