SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 18th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped a doubleheader to 21st-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University, 12-4 and 14-2, Friday afternoon in Savannah, Georgia. USI starts the 2012 campaign 0-2, while AASU goes to 8-0.

The Screaming Eagles did not get off to a great start in 2012, dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 12-4. The Pirates scored four in the first and four in the second innings to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

USI would get a tally in the fourth inning when senior catcher Jarrod Rose (Mishawaka, Indiana) scored on a wild pitch. AASU responded with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to re-extend the margin to 11 runs, 12-1.

A bright spot for the Eagles came in the ninth when they mustered a three-run rally to cut the Pirate lead to 12-4. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore outfielder Bryce Shoulders (Newburgh, Indiana).

USI senior right-hander Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri) took the loss in game one, allowing eight runs on nine hits and four walks. He also struck out three in five innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Pirates resumed their offensive attack on the USI pitching by scoring a run in the third and blew the game open with seven runs in the fourth. AASU would increase the lead to 11-0 before USI could get on the scoreboard.

The Eagles scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth on RBI singles by junior third baseman Reece Rounder (Evansville, Indiana) and Rose. AASU responded with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for the 14-2 final.

Rounder led USI offensively in the doubleheader by going six-for-eight with a RBI.

Senior right-hander Scott Cole (Patrick, Virginia) took the loss in his debut appearance for USI. Cole pitched three innings and allowed six runs on four hits and two walks.

With rain in the forecast, the Eagles and the Pirates will try to complete the three-game series on Saturday or Sunday. The first pitch each day is still tentatively scheduled for noon each day.
