EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team puts its perfect 7-0 record on the line Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Cedarville University in a Midwest Region clash at the Physical Activities Center.
USI, which will play for the first time in 10 days when it takes the court against the Yellow Jackets, is coming off a dominating 86-31 win over Marygrove College this past Sunday. The Screaming Eagles' grabbed a single-game school-record 69 rebounds and had what is believed to be a single-game school-record four double-doubles in the victory.
The Eagles, who lead the Great Lakes Valley Conference in eight statistical categories including scoring offense (84.1 ppg) and scoring margin (+30.9 ppg), have used a balanced attack to jump out to its best start since the 2000-01 season.
USI, which has had six different players lead it in scoring throughout the first seven games, has eight players averaging better than 6.0 points per game, including four that are scoring in double figures.
Sophomore forward/center
Anna Hackert has risen to the top of the Eagles' scoring column after averaging 16.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per outing in USI's last three contests. Hackert is second in the GLVC with a .590 field goal percentage, sixth in rebounding (8.3 rpg), and 12th in scoring (12.6 ppg).
Junior guards
Stephanie Carpenter and
Ariel Barnes are averaging 11.6 and 11.0 points per game, respectively, while sophomore forward/center
Mary O'Keefe is chipping in 11.0 points per contest.
Barnes and Carpenter also are among the league leaders in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. Barnes is fourth in the league with 4.3 assists per contest and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7). Carpenter, who leads the GLVC in three-pointers per game, is sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8) and tied for 11th in assists per game (3.3 apg).
Cedarville (6-2), which hosts Northwest Nazarene University Saturday before traveling to Evansville, is coming off a tough 64-46 home loss to No. 5 University of Indianapolis last weekend. The Yellow Jackets, who have posted wins over pre-season No. 24 Ferris State University and Bellarmine University earlier this season, trailed by just five early in the second half before the Greyhounds pulled away for the 18-point win.
Junior guard Kayla Jenerette leads the Yellow Jackets with 14.1 points per game, while junior center Lauryn Robinson is averaging a team-best 9.3 rebounds per contest.
Tuesday's matchup, the final non-conference outing for the Eagles and their last of the 2012 calendar year, is the first-ever meeting between USI and Cedarville in women's basketball. The game can be heard on WPSR 90.7 FM, while live stats, audio, and video can be accessed at gousieagles.com.
