EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team missed eight second-half free throws, including five in the final 2:20 of regulation, as it suffered a disappointing 55-50 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback, in overtime, to Missouri University of Science & Technology Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (6-5, 0-3 GLVC), which finished the game a dismal 8-of-20 from the charity stripe, had every opportunity to claim its first conference win of the season as it led 43-36 with eight minutes to play in the contest.
The Miners (9-2, 4-0 GLVC), who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, chiseled away at the Eagles lead, eventually tying the contest at 43-43 with a 7-0 run that lasted more than four minutes.
USI, which suffered its first setback in seven games at the PAC this season, led by two after sophomore guard
Stephanie Carpenter drained the second shot of a two-shot foul with seven seconds to play in the contest.
Missouri S&T, however, got a shot from senior guard/forward Julie Meyer to fall through the net as time expired to send the game into overtime with the two teams knotted up at 49-49.
After junior guard Hailee Parks, who led all scorers with 22 points, put the Miners up 53-50 with 17 seconds to play in overtime, the Eagles took their shot at tying the contest when junior guard
Marina Hartman (Big Bend, Wisconsin) fired up a three-pointer that missed the mark and went out-of-bounds with less than 10 seconds to play.
Missouri S&T added a pair of free throws in the final two seconds to seal the victory and hand the Eagles their second straight loss and fourth in the last five outings.
USI, which led by as many as eight early in the first half before going into the intermission with a 27-26 lead, got 17 points from Carpenter and 11 points from senior guard
Cootie Leeberg. Freshman forward
Brooke Valentine added five points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles, who played without their leading scorer in freshman forward/center
Anna Hackert, shot 34.5 percent from the field and held the Miners to .309 shooting percentage. Missouri S&T, which outrebounded the Eagles, 47-40, drained 21-of-31 from the charity stripe as it stayed atop the GLVC West Division standings.
USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Drury University at the PAC. Drury (8-4, 3-1 GLVC) upended Kentucky Wesleyan College, 70-60, Thursday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky.
