KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team couldn't buy a basket Saturday afternoon as the Screaming Eagles shot just 25.5 percent from the floor in a 63-47 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to host Rockhurst University.

USI (6-8, 0-6 GLVC), which trailed by six early in the opening period, led 26-23 at the break after using a late 5-0 spurt in the first half.

Rockhurst (4-9, 2-4 GLVC), however, opened the second half with a 5-0 run to take a brief two-point advantage. The Hawks used another 5-0 push to build a 39-32 advantage with 12:30 to play in the contest.

The Eagles trimmed the seven-point deficit to just two points with eight minutes to play in the game, but a 13-0 Rockhurst run ended the Eagles' surge and gave the Hawks a commanding 56-41 lead with 3:31 to play in the game.

USI (6-8, 0-6 GLVC), which shot just 15.8 percent (3-19) from three-point range and 12.5 percent (1-8) in the second half, went 0-6 from the field with a pair of turnovers during the decisive run that lasted nearly five minutes.

Rockhurst (4-9, 2-4 GLVC), meanwhile, hit 6-of-7 shots during its 13-0 run as it pulled away from the Eagles to gain its second win in three games. The Hawks, who out-rebounded the Eagles 22-10 in the final 20 minutes and 40-36 in the game, connected on 12 of their 24 shots in the second half after shooting just 26.9 percent in the opening period.

USI Head Coach Rick Stein thought the lack of offensive productivity hurt the Eagles in other areas, especially late in the contest. “I thought we did a lot of good things today. We guarded well and executed well, but you can't go on the road and score just 47 points and expect to win.

“Offensively, we got some good looks, but basketball is a game where you can feed off a lot of different things,” Stein continued. “I thought we lost a bit of our momentum on the defensive end due to our lack of scoring on the offensive end.”

Freshman forward/center Mary O'Keefe and senior guard Cootie Leeberg paced the Eagles. O'Keefe racked up a game and career-best 18 points, while Leeberg added 11 points and a team-best six rebounds.

Senior forward Chrissy Sarcone led the Hawks with 17 points, while junior guard MaKayla Grahn finished with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

USI returns to action Monday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts GLVC East Division rival Kentucky Wesleyan College at the Physical Activities Center. The Panthers (9-5, 3-3 GLVC) suffered a 68-58 setback to William Jewell College Saturday in Liberty, Missouri.
