Eagles conclude regular season versus Pumas

Division title and tournament seeding on the line

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The nationally-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team travels to Rensselaer, Indiana, to play Saint Joseph's College in the final four-game series of the 2011 regular season. The Screaming Eagles and Pumas square off in noon doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.

USI (30-15, 22-8 GLVC) continues to be ranked in all three of the national polls. The Eagles were ranked 14th by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25; 26th in the College Baseball Lineup Top 30; and 15th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30.

The Eagles enter the final weekend with two of goals in mind – clinch the GLVC East Division and the number one seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament.

To wrap up its fourth-straight GLVC regular season title and its first in the GLVC East, USI needs two wins; or a win and a loss by Bellarmine University and Northern Kentucky University. Capturing the number one seed in the GLVC Tournament is a little more complicated with four games left in the regular season.

If Missouri University of Science & Technology (24-15, 17-7 GLVC), which currently leads the West Division, captures the other division title, the Eagles must match the Miners win-for-win this weekend to earn the top spot in the conference tournament. USI won both games against Missouri S&T to open GLVC action this spring.

If Quincy University passes Missouri S&T for the GLVC West Division crown, the Ealges must win one more game than the Hawks this weekend to be the number one seed. USI and Quincy will not meet this year in the regular season.

The GLVC Tournament runs May 12-15 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The top three teams from the East Division and the top two teams from the West Division, along with three wild card teams, will qualify for the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

In USI's way are the Pumas of SJC (22-21-1, 15-15 GLVC). The Pumas are still in contention for a spot in the GLVC Tournament despite falling on tough times, going 4-14 in the last 18 games.

USI trails the all-time series with SJC, 33-26, after splitting a doubleheader last year. The Pumas have been a thorn in the side of the Eagles over the last six seasons, winning 12 of the last 14 meetings.
