EVANSVILLE, Ind.—A one-hit shutout by Quincy University senior pitcher Tories Bunzell and heavy rain showers eliminated the University of Southern Indiana softball team's chances of qualifying for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon. USI lost the opening game, 1-0, and saw rain end the second game in the bottom of the second inning.
The Screaming Eagles (21-22, 10-15 GLVC), who had an opportunity to clinch a spot in the conference's post-season tournament with a victory Sunday thanks to the University of Missouri-St. Louis' sweep of Rockhurst University, fell behind 1-0 in the first game as Quincy third baseman Rachel Trokey hit a two-out double in the top of the second inning to score the game's only run.
Quincy's tally in the second inning was all that was needed as Bunzell struck out 14 USI batters while allowing just five runners to get on base.
The Eagles, who trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning of game two before lightning and rain ended the nightcap prematurely, got runners on first and second with just one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bunzell, however, fanned the final two batters of the inning to end the Eagles' threat.
USI freshman pitcher
Madeline Brink pitched brilliantly as she allowed just one run off four hits and one walk. Brink racked up four strike outs of her own as she ended the year with an 11-11 record.
