EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 14
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader, including a 15-inning marathon, to the University of Indianapolis Saturday at the USI Baseball Field. The Greyhounds won the opener in 2-1 in an extra inning and the nightcap 9-6 in 15 innings.
The Screaming Eagles fall to 29-15 overall and 21-8 in the GLVC, while the Greyhounds go to 26-17, 15-16 GLVC.
The opening game was a good old fashion pitcher's duel between USI senior right-hander
Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana) and UIndy senior right-hander Cory Rupert with the Greyhounds winning 2-1 in eight innings. Rupert won in the end, allowing a first inning run and scattering eight USI hits.
Dennis (5-3) received the tough luck loss for USI. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and striking out two. The USI right-hander also threw only 99 pitches, compared to Rupert's 146.
USI junior shortstop
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) was the only Eagle to get two hits, while senior designated hitter
Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) drove in the Eagles' only run in the first inning.
The Eagles battled back from a 6-1 deficit, but left 16 runners on base in falling 9-6 after the Greyhounds scored three times in the 15th inning. USI left the bases loaded in the sixth and 14th against UIndy junior right-hander/shortstop Chris Saroff, who pitched 10 innings in the nightcap.
Saroff scatterd five USI hits and struck out eight to get his first win of the year.
USI did get a strong relief appearance from junior right-hander
Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri). Dill pitched six of the extra innings, scattering two hits and striking out a season-best seven hitters.
The four-game series concludes with USI Senior Day Sunday at noon. The Eagles will honor 11 seniors prior to the game.
