USI stumbles against OCU,9-5

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The 14th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team stumbled against Oakland City University, 9-5, Tuesday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 28-13 overall, while OCU rises to 17-10.
 
The Screaming Eagles rallied from a pair of deficits to even the score, 3-3, after five innings, but the Mighty Oaks took the lead for good with a six-run seventh to post the win. USI tried to rebound with a pair of runs in the eighth, but had rallies in the sixth, seventh, and eighth cut short by double plays.
 
At the plate, senior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) drove in three of USI's five runs with a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Junior catcher Jarrod Rose (Mishawaka, Indiana) was the only Eagle to have two hits.
 
The loss on the mound belonged to senior right-hander Jared Canterbury (Petersburg, Illinois) in relief. Canterbury (0-2) allowed five hits on five runs in two innings of work.
 
Freshman right-hander Jim Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) started the game for the Eagles and picked up the no-decision. Mulvaney worked the first four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. He also struck out a season-best four hitters.
 
The Eagles finish the 2011 regular season home schedule this weekend when they host the University of Indianapolis for a four-game series. The first pitch of the series is Friday at 6 p.m. The series continues Saturday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader and concludes Sunday with a noon single game.
 
Sunday is Senior Day for the Eagles, who will honor 11 seniors prior to the first pitch.
