Eagles score 20 runs to win nightcap

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  – The 14
th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a three-game losing streak with a 20-7 win in the nightcap at Bellarmine University Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles salvaged the victory after dropping Friday's suspended game, 4-3, and the scheduled doubleheader opener, 4-2.
 
 
USI's record goes to 15-8 overall and 7-2 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine finishes the day 12-11 overall, 5-3 GLVC.
 
The Eagles scored 20 runs on 17 hits in the nightcap's offensive explosion. USI reached the 20-run plateau for the first time since scoring 22 against the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2009 regular season.
 
Senior centerfielder 
Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana) led the hit parade with five hits, including three doubles, three runs scored, and one RBI. Junior shortstop 
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) almost matched Blinn with four hits, one double, three runs scored, and three RBIs.
 
The USI power numbers came from junior rightfielder 
Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana) and senior leftfielder 
Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana). Chestnut blasted a pair of home runs, scored three runs, and had four RBIs. Huling, who also scored three times in the game, recorded his first home run of the year in the sixth inning.
 
On the mound, senior right-hander 
Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana) posted his third win of the season after going the first six innings. Dennis (3-1) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out a season-high nine hitters.
 
Senior right-hander 
Jared Canterbury (Petersburg, Illinois), senior left-hander 
Scott Handley (Schererville, Indiana), and junior 
Adam Hensley (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) finished the game on the mound for the Eagles.
 
The day did not start well for the Eagles as they ended up losing Friday's suspended game, 4-3, with senior right-hander 
Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) taking the loss. Leach (5-1) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits and four walks, while striking out three in seven innings of work Friday night.
 
In the doubleheader opener, USI allowed three unearned runs in the fourth to lose 4-2.
 
Tthe Eagles had a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth after spotting the Knights a run in the third. Blinn scored on a sacrifice fly by senior pitcher/designated hitter 
Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois), while junior second baseman 
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher 
Jarrod Rose (Mishawaka, Indiana).
 
The Knights, however, bounced back with the three unearned runs in bottom of the fourth to take the lead and seal the victory.
 
Choate (5-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season on the mound. He allowed four runs, one earned, on six hits, while striking out six in six innings of work.
 
The four-game series concludes at 11 a.m. Sunday when the Eagles and the Knights play a single game at Bellarmine's Knights Field. The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field April 5-6 when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a two-game series. First pitch each night is 6 p.m.
