Eagles hit the road in the GLVC

USI is away for the next six games

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team is on the road for the next six games in the GLVC, beginning at Lewis University for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch for each day's doubleheader is noon.

Game coverage, including audio and live stats, can be accessed at gousieagles.com. Fans also can listen to all of the action on WSWI 820AM.

The road trip finishes April 19 when USI visits Kentucky Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

USI moved up in all three of the national polls this week. The Screaming Eagles were ranked 14th by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25; 15th in the College Baseball Lineup Top 30; and 23rd in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30.

The Screaming Eagles (21-9, 13-3 GLVC) ran their way to a 5-1 mark in the recent homestand with KWC and Northern Kentucky University. Nine USI players were a perfect 21-of-21 on the base paths during the homestand, while the team is 72-of-88 during the season.

Junior rightfielder Bryan Chestnut (West Terre Haute, Indiana) led the Eagles with five stolen bases during the homestand, while junior catcher Jarrod Rose (Mishawaka, Illinois) was second with four thefts. Senior centerfielder Justin Blinn (Vincennes, Indiana), who had three stolen bases during the homestand, is the top thief on the team with 14 base swipes this spring.

Blinn leads off for the Eagles and leads the team with a .339 batting average. Senior designated hitter Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) is second with a .304 mark at the plate.

In clutch situations, the Eagles are turning to junior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) for the second year in a row. Vance, who is hitting .357 with runners on base, has a team-high 28 RBIs this spring. Choate and Rose follow in the RBI category with 22 each.

USI's bulldog on the mound continues to be senior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana). Leach has accrued a 6-2 mark in nine games and 71.0 innings of work, posting a 2.54 ERA.

During the homestand, the Eagles also received an outstanding performance by senior right-hander Taylor Dennis (Covington, Indiana). Dennis raised his record to 4-1 overall with his first complete-game victory of the year. He also has lowered his ERA nearly two runs per game the last two weeks to 4.75 in 10 games and 30.1 innings on the mound.

The Flyers of Lewis (17-8, 10-4 GLVC) welcome the Eagles after winning four-straight GLVC games last week and have won seven of eight overall. Lewis is in second place in the GLVC East Division, two games off of USI's pace.

USI trails Lewis in the all-time series, 46-44, but won the only meeting with the Flyers last season in the GLVC Tournament. The Eagles swept the 2009 three-game series from the Flyers in Romeoville, Illinois, the last time the teams met during the regular season.
